They've finally delivered: the Dev Team has released the Ultrasn0w full unlock for last-gen iPhones running firmware 3.0.

The instructions are nice and short:

1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0
2. Jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w or PwnageTool (this will also install Cydia/Icy)
3. Run Cydia or Icy
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or icy
5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w' in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G
7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
8. Enjoy

It bears repeating that this hack will not work on the iPhone 3GS, though it will work on 2G and 3G models. The Dev Team is obviously working on this, but they're not giving any fresh indication as to when a fully compatible tool will come out.

Tutorial: iPhone 3.0 Unlock Using RedSn0w

This RedSn0w guide & tutorial will show you how to unlock your iPhone 2G using RedSn0w. This guide is to unlock the iPhone 2G only. If you want to unlock the iPhone 3G, you will have to jailbreak your iPhone first using this guide, but you will have to wait for the Dev Team to release UltraSn0w, the unlocking tool for iPhone 3G. There is no way to jailbreak or unlock the new iPhone 3G S so far but I am confident the Dev Team is working on something.

Note that this RedSn0w tutorial is for Windows users but I assume the steps are similar on a Mac.

1. Before doing anything, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and the latest firmware 3.0 installed on your iPhone 2G.

2. Create a new folder on your desktop. In this folder, download RedSn0w as well as the latest 3.0 firmware for your iPhone 2G from our iPhone downloads page (make sure you pick the right firmware). Also download the following bootloader files: BL 3.9 and BL 4.6

3. Unzip and launch RedSn0w.

4. Click “browse” and select the 3.0 firmware you downloaded in a folder in step 2.

5. Once the firmware has been successfully identified, click “next”.

6. Select “install Cydia” and “ulock”, then click “next”.

7. Browse for the bootloader files you downloaded in step 2, and click “next”.

8. Make sure your iPhone is plugged into the computer and that it is off. Click “next”.

9. RedSn0w will then guide you to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Hold down the power button for 2 seconds. Without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds. Without releasing the home button, release the power button but keep holding the home button for 30 seconds.

10. If done correctly, your iPhone should reboot and the jailbreak process should start. This step may take up to 15-20 minutes so be patient.

11. Once this process is over, you will get a message saying that it is “done!”

12. Click the “finish” button and reboot your iPhone. The reboot may take up to 10 minutes so again, be patient.

13. Congratulations, you just jailbroke and unlocked your iPhone 3.0 with RedSn0w.

This tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G using PwnageTool for Mac. Following this guide is the first step to take in order to unlock your iPhone 3G later on using UltraSn0w.

1. Make sure you have downloaded the latest version of iTunes 8.2 and that you have updated your iPhone to the latest 3.0 firmware.

2. Create a folder on your desktop. In this folder, download PwnageTool 3.0 and your iPhone 3G 3.0 firmware from our iPhone downloads page.

3. Launch PwnageTool, agree to the warning, and select the “expert mode”.

4. Select your iPhone model (iPhone 3G) and click the blue arrow to continue.

5. Now if your computer doesn’t automatically detect the iPhone 3G 3.0 firmware you downloaded in step 1, browse for it.

6. You will then have a menu with 6 choices. Choose “general”, which will allow you to set your own root partition size. Click the blue arrow to continue.

7. You will now have 3 checkboxes. Make sure only “enable baseband update” is checked. You will also need to increase the root partition size. Usually setting the root partition around 700MB is enough. Click next to continue.

8. When you get to the “bootneuter settings”, simply click the blue arrrow to continue.

9. The “Cydia settings” allow you to choose packages to download now so you don’t have to download them from Cydia later. Choose any of the packages you want and click next.

10. You will now have the possibility to choose your own boot logo. I will skip this step as it is useless.

11. After setting your own boot logos (if you chose to), you will now be able to build your own IPSW file. Click the blue “build” button to start.

12. Choose a folder to save your custom firmware (ie. desktop).

13. Your custom firmware will now be built, which may take up to 15-20 minutes. Be patient.

14. Enter your administrator password.

15. When asked if your iPhone has been pwned before, say “no”, even if it has.

16. Make sure your iPhone is connected to your computer and turn it off, as prompted.

17. This is the tricky part. You will now have to follow directions to enter DFU mode. It will ask you to hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds. Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds.

18. If done correctly, you will get a message saying that you successfully entered DFU mode. Close PwnageTool and launch iTunes.

19. iTunes will give you a message saying it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click OK.

20. In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click “restore” at the same time. It will open a window where you will have to select the custom firmware that you built a few minutes before.

21. iTunes will then restore your iPhone 3G using the custom firmware. This step may take 15-20 minutes so again, be patient.

22. Once done, you will have to “set up your iPhone”, either as a new phone (which I recommend), or from backup.

23. Reboot your iPhone and you should have a Cydia icon on the springboard.

24. Congrats! You just jailbroke your iPhone 3G using PwnageTool 3.0

13.You will then be asked if you’re a legit iPhone user. If you click “yes” this will not unlock the phone, thus defeating the whole purpose of this guide. Make sure you click “no”.

14. You will then have to choose a folder to save your custom firmware (ie. desktop). You custom firmware will now be built, which may take up to 15-20 minutes. Be patient.

15. Enter your administrator password.

Simple Hack to Enable Tethering on iPhone OS 3.0

The non-availability of tethering and MMS features in the U.S at the time of the launch of iPhone OS 3.0 was probably the most disappointing news that was announced at the WWDC 2009 Keynote address.

However, some clever folks have figured out a way to enable tethering on iPhone OS 3.0 without the need to jailbreak their iPhone.

There are several methods floating around to enable tethering on iPhone OS 3.0 but I found the method where you can enable it via iPhone's Safari, the easiest.

The process of tethering allows your laptop to use your iPhone's data connection to surf the internet.

The idea behind the hack to enable tethering on the iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0 is to download a .ipcc, which is carrier specific and update your iPhone with it via iTunes. The procedure gets even simpler using iPhone's Safari browser.

Step 1:

Folks at BenM.at have hosted several iPhone tethering configuration files for many carriers across several countries. You need to go to the following link http://help.benm.at/help.php using iPhone's Safari browser.

Step 2:

Then click on Mobileconfigs on that page:

Step 3:

Select your country from the list.

Step 4:

Once you have selected the country, you will be prompted to select the provider.

Step 5:

Tap on the Install button.

Step 6:

Then tap on the Install Now button.

Step 7:

Tap on the Done button.

Step 8:

Finally, go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet Tethering and tap on the toggle button to enable tethering.

That's all, it is as easy as that and no hacking required, can you believe it and the best part is it's free.

But the way this hack has spread, I won't be surprised if AT&T clamps down on it soon so enjoy it till it works.

Please note that this is a hack so proceed with caution.

Some known issues:

This seems to disable Voicemail feature for some users.

It doesn't seem to work with 1st generation iPhone.

IPhone 3.0 Features Clueless “Objectionable Content” Warnings

Amidst all the great stuff in iPhone 3.0, there’s bound to be a few oddballs that just aren’t as impressive or useful as we’d like—for example, “objectionable content” warnings on such harmless apps as Shazam.

iPhone 3.0’s new parental controls allow you to specify the age of the user, from 4+ to 17+, and offer warnings about apps Apple thinks its users might find objectionable. Oddly, one such app is apparently Shazam, the great multi-platform app that identifies songs picked up by the iPhone’s mic. CNET speculates that the new parental controls might give Apple more freedom to allow more, shall we say, adult-themed apps into the App Store, but we wouldn’t hold our breath.

iPhone Dev Team Unlocks iPhone 3.0 With New "UltraSn0w"

The iPhone Dev Team, jailbreakers of all things iPhone, have released a demonstration video of a version of yellowsn0w they dub "ultrasn0w" that purportedly unlocks every version of the iPhone running everything from 3.0 on down the line.

They haven't revealed too much about "ultrasn0w" yet for fear of Apple updating the software with a lock, only saying that the new software should be out this Friday for your hacking pleasure. It's not totally clear that the newly-rebranded ultrasn0w will work on the new iPhone 3GS, either, but Apple hasn't been able to create an iPhone the Dev Team can't jailbreak yet. iPhone's Xbox Live Equivalent Set to Launch Tomorrow

High-end iPhone gaming company Ngmoco will be launching Plus+, their social gaming service, for the iPhone tomorrow.

Similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live subscription, Ngmoco Plus+ gamers will be able to create profiles, keep track of friends, records and gaming history across multiple games. Gamedaily is reporting that Rockstar is considering porting Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars to the iPhone platform. GTA: Chinatown Wars is already coming to the DS and porting it to the iPhone seems a logical step for the RockStardevelopers. The game will use the touch screentechnology and accelerometer. Nothing has been made official yet but Mike Hickey does quote :

Looks like T-Mobile's Dutch site listed the new iPhone 3G 2009 models just a few days before their announcement this Monday. The site lists a 32GB model, which is no surprise, and also one with the notation "NTB." Mysterious!

This looks pretty real to us; we all know the iPhone's storage capacity is going to get a needed bump to 32GB. According to the site, it'll be available in both black and white, and in 16/32GB capacities, but there's also a listing for "iPhone 2009 (NTB)," which is a mystery to us. It's the only one to include neither colour nor capacity next to its name, so we're still in the dark about what that might mean.

The prior versions of the iPhone (listed as 2G and 3G) remain in the list, along with one called "iPhone 3G 8GB V2," which is also new to us. Could this be the rumoured $US99 iPhone? We'll have to wait two more days to find out.

leaks from Apple’s partners over the past several weeks have signaled the arrival of third-generation iPhones in capacities of 16GB and 32GB. While the changes to Carphone Warehouse’s systems should not be treated as confirmation of new iPhone specifications, the retailer’s status as an official iPhone reseller could potentially make it privy to such information.

Coupled with Best Buy’s recently-released internal memorandum notifying employees of expected low inventory of the current iPhone 3G we reported, as well as a similar advisory issued by Brightpoint, an iPhone distributor in Australia, retail signs are aligned in pointing to new iPhone disclosures early next week at Apple’s annual developers conference.

Ozaki iCommand Controller Unites the iPod Shuffle with Third Party Headphones

The iPod Shuffle's controller placement makes replacing headphones difficult and doesn't allow the use of third party accessories. Ozaki's latest adapter, the iCommand Controller, looks to fix that by putting the controls back in your hands. Although the 1-inch adapter's shiny black exterior doesn't exactly match the slick Shuffle's casing, it was designed so that the volume, play, pause and shuffle controls are on the side, keeping the MP3 player looking clean and simple. There's no word on pricing or availability yet, but as Apple is supposedly coming out with their own Shuffle adapter, I'd imagine that Ozaki's iCommand should be slightly cheaper.

It’s only 6 days to go. We’ll see Apple announces the public release of iPhone 3.0 in the Worldwide Developers Conference. Today, Apple starts to put up banner for the event. This year, it appears the theme of the event will be around App Store. On Jun 8, Apple’s Philip Schiller will be on stage to deliver the keynote, show off iPhone OS 3.0 (I expect there are a few exciting features that are not covered before)
and probably announce a new iPhone.

New iPhone Pictures Leaked

These pictures were supposedly taken by an Apple employee. If that’s the case, I guess they are pictures of the dev website which will go live once the new iPhone is announced next week at the WWDC. The pictures were posted on iSpazio, where it says you can see a front camera and the speaker moved upward. I personally don’t see anything! (click on each picture for a wider image)

What bugs me with these pictures is that there is no carrier logo on the iPhone. Apple has always shown the carrier logo on it’s ads or website…

Command and Conquer: Red Alert release for iPhone soon?

Here’s the lovely iPhone game rumor of the week, although to be fair it looks like more than just a rumor.

The gist is that the massively popular Command & Conquer real-time strategy game series is coming to the iPhone soon – according to Planet Command & Conquer:

“Apoc has just confirmed on his Twitter page that “Command & Conquer Red Alert for iPhone will be at E3. Obviously, that doesn’t clarify whether it’s a port, a spin-off, a tie-in, a mix

of all three RA games, or something else entirely. It also doesn’t make any mention of pricing details or a release schedule, but at least now we know that something set in the Red Alert universe is heading to iPhone.”

Apoc is a “communtity commander” for the game and is well know in the C&C world, so this seems like a lot more than a rumor. Big name games continue to march onto the iPhone, a good indication of the iPhone’s gaming fortunes in the future.

Testing company certifies new iPhones, including 32GB - and 4GB models?

A standards body greenlighting cellphones for carriers has supposedly approved four new iPhone models, including a new 32GB model as well as an unusual 4GB version. A Canadian rumor is now said to be showing the smaller-capacity device.

The PCS Type Review Certification Board was said on Monday to have approved new 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB versions of Apple’s handsets for use with AT&T.

While most have expected a 32GB model due to advances in technology, Engadget’s “trusted” source for the purported leak notes that the range of storage levels is unusually wide for Apple, which until now has never had more than two capacities on sale at a time. It sold

4GB iPhones for just three months, dropping the lowest capacity in September 2007.

The company also has a history of always upgrading the feature set of its devices with each new introduction rather than it scaling back for the sake of a new model, further casting doubt on the apparent update.

Unless the claimed certification is referring to both old and new models, however, the approval would support notions that Apple is moving capacity both upwards and downwards to catch the largest audience possible. Analysts have called for lower-priced iPhones but have until now had little to no corroborating information other than a desire for their existence as part of a market share grab.

Best Buy warns of low iPhone supply; issues note to staff

Best Buy over the weekend became the latest Apple partner to warn staffers of dwindling iPhone supply that could leave some of its stores without product to sell for a few weeks later this month.

In a memo from its corporate division, the Richfield, Minnesota-based specialty electronics retailer told mobile sales employees that the iPhone 3G is now in constraint, noting that inventory of the touch-screen handsets will be light over the coming weeks and that some locations are likely to run out all together.

The advisory is similar to one issued

roughly a week ago by Brightpoint, an Australian distributor supplying Vodafone Australia and others in the region with iPhone 3Gs.

“We have just been notified that the following devices are End Of Life and that there is only a few weeks stock available from Brightpoint,” the carrier said in reference to the 16GB iPhone 3G. “This is an opportunity to take advantage of these devices whilst they’re still available.”

None of this should be shocking, as the current iPhone is seen as an end of life product, and companies aren’t actively restocking them.

Apple Greediness Shows Again

Once again, Apple proves to be pretty greedy as it wants to charge you twice for applications you’ve already purchased. This pop up window was spotted on a few iPhone over the weekend and it suggests that Apple will charge you again if you decide to download over the air an app you already paid for in the past. As an alternative, you can download the app for free if you do so from your computer.

Is Apple greedy? Or is AT&T asking Apple to do that in order to reduce the load on the network? I know for sure Apple is greedy but charging for “re-downloads” doesn’t really make sense. With the WWDC coming up next week, I guess we’ll find an answer to these questions sooner rather than later.

iPhone-Dev Team to Potential Jailbreakers: Do Not Install iTunes 8.2

Apple have just released the official version of the 8.2 update of iTunes. This update is preping for the iPhone/iPod Touch OS 3.0. Dev Team have released a message to all potential jailbreakers saying DO NOT UPDATE.

Today’s iTunes 8.2 update changes the way your computer talks to the device. This affects things like QuickPwn and PwnageTool when they try to identify what’s connected. Also, ssh over usb breaks due to same reasons. Fixes are in the works but for now avoid 8.2

So if you are planning on jailbreaking your iPhone/iPod Touch in the future, do not update to 8.2 until furthur notice.

Energizer Energi To Go Line Now Boosts iPhone Battery Life, Sucks Up Solar

The folks at Energizer are updating their Energi To Go line of rechargeable battery life extenders to encompass the iPhone 3G and solar power.

The first new entries, two form-fitting, rubberized AP Charger battery packs for the iPhone, had me thinking of Incase Power Slider .

They're not as eye-catching as the Incase, but they're not as expensive, either. It's $50 for the AP1000 and $80 for the beefier, longer-lasting AP1500. Weigh your options, battery pack wants and desires accordingly. Also, in the case of the AP1500, Energizer promises to double the battery life of a typical iPhone charge. Updated: As some commenters have noted, and I'm inclined to agree with, that branding front and center is fugly at best. Definitely not subtle.

In the aforementioned solar power category comes the SP1000 and SP2000, for $50 and $100, respectively. Boasting 500 charges each, these solar cells include a set of tips so that you can charge all manner of GPS devices, MP3 players and cellphones out in the wilds of suburbia. Or camping in the woods too, if that's your thing. More tips are available online, should the included six not meet your needs. The SP line even charges via indoor light sources, although not as quickly as the advertised 6-hour charge time in direct sunlight.

In all, there will be about 10 new additions to this line of battery packs and chargers coming in June, Energizer tells us, courtesy a new partnership with XPAL Power. Not much else to say on XPAL save a brief mention in our glorious Gadget Deals of the Day series.

Yes, the more I look at these images, the more I'm convinced they are the real deal. As we get closer to WWDC, it seems that some stuff may be starting to leak. We saw potential parts from the next-generation iPhone 3G and what may be a new finish.

These could very well be the first shots of the new iPhone, featuring the new compass and video functions, as well as the autofocus in the camera. They look like polished new Apple applications. You can also see how the camera app can change between video and still modes, as well as the autofocus overlay—I wonder if you could change it with your finger—and MMS screens.

iPhone 'Doom Classic' Screenshots and Notes

Id software's John Carmack posted the first screenshots and notes about the development of Doom Classic for the iPhone.

Carmack reveals he's been spending the majority of his time working on iPhone Doom Classic for several weeks and the first beta build went out to testers just a couple of days ago. He expects Doom will be ready for submission to the App Store next month.

Carmack also describes iPhone Doom as a more serious effort than Wolfenstein 3D Classic which was released to the iPhone in March.

Carmack goes on to describe the efforts in porting Doom to the iPhone including the challenges and design decisions surrounding the artwork. The game is said to run at a solid 30 fps and "it is Doom as you remember it, which is quite a bit better than it actually was." The first release will support multi-player over Wi-Fi and a later iPhone 3.0 release will support multiplayer bluetooth. Unfortunately, online multi-player will not be included since "the latencies just aren't good enough".

We'll let you know as soon as the game is released into the App Store.

3rd-gen iPhone parts go on sale in China

Parts purportedly for the next-generation iPhone have appeared for sale on a Chinese wholesale site. Both screen bezels and LCD panels for the the third-gen iPhone are listed, with shipping expected to begin “within 5 to 12 working days”.

As well as the listings, there are comparison shots with existing parts for the iPhone 3G. While there’s no telling whether the parts are legitimate, the site - China Ontrade - does have a wide range of original factory components not only for the iPhone 3G but for various cellphone brands, MacBooks and Nintendo.

Close examination of the bezel suggests that the iPhone’s speaker has been pushed further up toward the top of the handset, either because the screen now occupies more room or, perhaps more likely, to make space for a front-facing camera to be used for video calls. There’s no sign of any OLED panels, as had been tipped for inclusion in the new iPhone.

This year’s sale, offers rebates on Apple’s full line of iPods, up to $229 (depending on which iPod you choose…) In any case, a purchase of any new mac qualifies as long as its not a Mac Mini. Rebate Amounts are as follows:

Apple warns of static shock from iPhone, iPod

iPhone and iPod users may experience a "small and quick" shock via their ear buds due to a build-up of static electricity, Apple warned this week.

People listening to one of the devices in extremely dry air are most at risk of receiving a static electricity shock through the ear buds, according to a warning posted on Apple's website. The post likened the condition to the discharge that occurs when a person drags his or her feet across a carpet then gets a shock by touching a door knob.

However, Apple asserted that this condition did not necessarily indicate that Apple's equipment was malfunctioning.

"This condition is not limited to Apple hardware and static can potentially build up on almost any hardware and could be discharged using any brand of ear buds," Apple said.

Apple's warning didn't mention what prompted the company to issue the warning, but a discussion thread on the company's support site showed a few users had voiced concern about the condition.

"Maybe it's just me but for a couple of weeks now my earphones are delivering little electric shocks into my ears," wrote one reader. "I just wonder if anyone else is going through this issue."

Apple made several suggestions in the warning on how to remedy the condition when indoors, including the use of a humidifier to raise the moisture level of the air, hand lotions to moisturise dry skin, or an anti-static spray. The site also recommends users wear clothes made of natural fibres instead of synthetic fibres. When users are outdoors, Apple suggests users keep their device in a bag or a case to keep it out of the wind and refrain from frequently removing it from pockets as the rubbing may cause static build-up.

Let’s examine the feasibility of these features in the next iPhone.

-32GB and 16GB to replace current capacities

This upgrade in storage is very plausible and is almost expected. Last year, the iPhone 3G was introduced with capacities that were double that of its predecessor. It stands to reason this would occur again with the natural progression of the technology. This increase in storage has also been reported by several news outlets.

-Current subsidized price-points to be maintained

There has been a lot of speculation that Apple may attempt to reduce the price of the iPhone in an attempt to gain market share or battle the upcoming Palm Pre. With these new features, including an OLED screen, it seems unlikely they can lower the price points. At the same time when the iPhone 3G was introduced at the subsidized price, it sold in record numbers. To increase the price now would not likely be in Apple’s best interest from a sales-volume perspective. All things considered it seems likely that the prices won’t come up or down. Given Apple’s track record of upgrading products without raising prices, it is safe to assume that prices of the iPhone will more than likely remain the same.

-3.2 Megapixel camera

According to our source, the new iPhone will take much better and clearer pictures. This will likely be achieved by offering the ability to focus the lens as a new feature. This has also been reported by multiple sources, and therefor seems very credible.

-Video recording & editing capabilities

The iPhone finally having the ability to record video seems possible given the strong demand. But the ability to edit the videos you record on the iPhone itself? This feature has been in multiple rumor reports, however it seems highly questionable. If the ability to edit pictures was already present it would lend credence to this rumor. All of this considered, our source says video editing on the device will be implemented.

-Ability to send a picture & video via MMS

Sending MMS messages is one of the most anticipated features expected in the upcoming revision. This ability was officially announced alongside the iPhone OS 3.0 roadmap. With the capability of sending pictures via MMS it would make sense that you could also send video. It was already announced that voice memos will be able to be sent, so video is a natural extension. The size limitations of videos in MMS was not available to our source.

-Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device

This detail is of little concern, but it may suggest significant design changes.

-OLED screen

An OLED display would be a welcome change from the LCD screen the current iPhone utilizes. The main benefit of using an OLED screen used on the iPhone is a possible increase in battery life. Its difficult to judge the accuracy of this rumor; it would certainly be an excellent choice for the display, however OLED screens are relatively expensive at this time and my prove difficult to transition to while lowering or even maintaining the iPhone’s current price point. The source did not detail if the new OLED screen would come with a 640 x 960 resolution. (note: this resolution is what would be expected to maintain backwards compatibility with applications currently deployed)

-1.5X The battery life

Improved battery, possibly as a result of the OLED display; this may also be due to improved battery technologies. We always hope for battery improvements in a new model and with the new features it is likely to expect better battery performance.

-Double the RAM and processing power

According to our source, the next generation iPhone will have “roughly double the RAM and processing power.” He elaborated by explaining that the increase in processing power would be partially achieved through over-clocking.

-Built-in FM transmitter

It’s unclear why Apple would ultimately introduce this into the iPhone. Currently, none of Apple’s products include an activated FM transmitter. This feature has been rumored by other news outlets. We just don’t understand why - we didn’t buy a Zune for a reason.

-Apple logo on the back to light up

Our source described this feature as being similar to the illuminated Apple logo on the back of the notebook line. The light will be white and always on while the phone is powered on. There have been no reports of this to date, and it seems to be an odd cosmetic choice. Frankly, if iPhone users had a choice between an Apple logo light and increased battery performance, it’s an easy guess as to what users would choose. Due to the battery considerations this seems hard to believe.

-Rubber-tread backing

Another significant design change, our source described this as being “similar to the back of a blackberry.” It would be similar to a blackberry in that instead of smooth plastic back, the new iPhone would have a treaded rubber-type back. This would certainly provide a better grip, as well as may devastate the third party iPhone case market.

-Sleeker design

Our source was not able to be more specific. He mentioned this in passing while describing the cosmetic changes regarding the metal band and rubber back.

-Built-in compass

A digital compass is a new feature to be added as well. Naturally, the purpose of a compass is to show you what direction you are facing. This certainly seems like a reasonable add-on and has been reported previously.

-Revolutionary combination of the camera, GPS, compass, orientation sensor, and Google maps

The camera will work with the GPS, compass, orientation sensor and Google maps to identify what building or location you have taken a picture of. We at first had difficulties believing this ability. However, such a “feature” is technically possible. If the next generation iPhone was to contain a compass then all of the components necessary to determine the actually plane in space for an image taken. The GPS would be used to determine the physical location of the device. The compass would be used to determine the direction the camera was facing. And the orientation sensor would be used to determine the orientation of the camera relative to the gravity. Additionally the focal length and focus of the camera could even assist is determining the distance of any focused objects in the picture. In other words, not only would the device know where you are, but it could determine how you are tilting it and hence it would know EXACTLY where in space your picture was composed. According to our source, Apple will use this information to introduce several groundbreaking features. For example, if you were to take a picture of the Staples Center in Los Angeles, you will be provided with a prompt directing you to information about the building, address, and/or area. This information will include sources such as wikipedia. This seems like quite an amazing service; and a little hard to believe, however while the complexity of such a service may be unrealistic, such is actually feasible with the sensors onboard the next generation iPhone.

-Turn by turn directions

Although a hot topic since iPhone 2.0, this has yet to be officially introduced to Apple’s Maps app. Previous reports have specified that Google maps could not be utilized due to licensing issues, however our source claims that these issues have recently been overcome and will be available in the OS 3.0 software. While this would be an exciting leap for the iPhone, its very questionable that this would be completely true.

-July 17th release date

Our source says the new version of the iPhone is expected to be available for purchase July 17th of this year. This is believable considering the previous iPhone releases have been on Fridays as well.

It is important to remember that, while this source appears credible, this information could prove incorrect. Apple may have produced several prototypes to either test various functions or simply minimize the dissemination of product knowledge before the official announcement. However if this information proves to be accurate, the new iPhone will certainly be second to none.

The mobile gaming industry is growing like wildfire. Video gaming giants like EA were caught off guard by the explosion of mobile gaming, and are now scrambling to release popular their popular games before the bubble pops. With that, a recent study by Gartner found that the mobile gaming industry will continue to grow by 10% a year, and will hit $6.3 billion (yes that is with a b) by the year 2011.

With the iPhone representing a solid chunk of that revenue, it is only expected that the iPhone accessory business will grow in parallel. Enter the iPhone gaming grip.

The grip was invented and released by a Japanese company named Trinity, who focus specifically on accessories for iPods, iPhones and other Apple products. The gaming grip is made out of sweat proof silicon, which is actually more convenient that one might first think. However, it does not come without a hefty price tag at $51 a pop.

Now where does that leave someone who purchased the beta from a stranger on Graigslist? Not in a good place obviously since to get your issue taken care of or to have your phone replaced you must call a developer-only help line. Now if you are a bit more expierienced with the iPhone you can always try to downgrade back to the 2.2.1 software before going into the Apple Store but say your home button is not working, you are flat out of luck and you are now stuck with a official iPhone paper weight.

This late into the beta cycle, in a few short months it will be released to the public anyway.

The latest iPhone rumor based, as per usual, on a thin thread of evidence implies that new phone will pump out HD quality video, and even have an HD compatible screen. This is entirely plausible, and it begs the question: What are the implications of Apple making such a move?

While going HD may seem like a no brainer, a change of such magnitude is a delicate issue for Apple to navigate.

All of the currently existing Apps are written for the current screen size 480 by 320 pixels at 163 pixels per inch--and it's unclear what a revolutionary screen-change would mean for older apps. Would they simply run in a letterbox automatically? Would they need to be re-written for the new display? App creators may want to optimize, but that could require significant development work. All-in-all, the change would have big implications for the App Store, which is a primary reason the iPhone remains so successful.

A revolutionary next-gen iPhone packed with a new 720p screen and extra tech implies a similar or even more expensive device, which would have a significant impact on sales. The iPhone is already expensive, its high price is the reason people often cite for not buying one. An evolutionary iPhone, without HD, could go on sale at a lower price, especially if Apple manages to shrink manufacturing costs and strike deals with electronic component suppliers.

Macrumors is reporting that since the release of iPhone OS 3.0 beta, code hackers have been busy scourging configuration files to find what Apple might have planned for us in the next version of the iPhone.

Over the past few days there has been mention of the possibility of video uploading and editing but today an video recording interface seems to have been discovered.

In this screenshot taken from MacRumors site, you can see that on the bottom right hand corner there's a switch to toggle from still camera to video camera.

Rapper Eminem is making an iPhone and iPod Touch game called Relapse.

The silver-tongued star confirmed the project via Twitter, claiming the game "is coming along nicely". Eminem's website says Relapse will be out on 19th May - the same day as his Relapse music album.

Eminem provided a single shot of the game. This depicts a squat, dark-haired Eminem pacing moodily through a beaten-up hotel lobby, flanked front and back by bloody-faced zombies; a 2D scrolling beat-'em-up, in other words.

His fans are excited: "I'm glad I've got the iPhone, the game will be awesome. Most of my life I've seen dead bodies splattered all over the ground, 'cause were I grew up ppl just jumped from the top of the 30th floor. I never forget the smell of death," writes the chirpy "babychub" on Enimen's Twitter .

CNET highlights Email 'n Walk [App Store, Free for a Limited Time], a new application that utilizes the iPhone's camera and a transparent window to allow users to compose e-mails while keeping an eye on what's going on front of them.

The idea is simple: start up Email 'n Walk, type in your subject, and start typing a message. While you write, Email 'n Walk uses your iPhone camera to show you what's in front of you so you don't run into anyone. I took it for a test run outside our offices here in San Francisco and even though it felt a little silly, the app works as advertised. When you're done, hit send and you'll be transferred to the iPhone mail app to add recipients and send your e-mail.

As the application's developers note, users should obviously observe caution while using the application and remain aware of what is going on around them at all times. While the application could certainly be of some use while stationary or possibly walking, attempting to use the application while biking or driving, for example, would be incredibly unwise, needless to say.

Chinese Forum Poster Describes Next Generation iPhone Details

We've been keeping an eye on some reports coming out of Chinese forum Weiphone over the past couple of weeks, and it appears the reports are starting to spread. In early May, a forum poster from the Chinese site posted specs and a screenshot from what is claimed to be the next generation iPhone.

The image above was uploaded and seems to depict a new iPhone model number "MB717LL" with 32GB of Storage. If the original poster's claims are to be believed, the new iPhone will contain the following features:

- 600MHz CPU Speed (up from 400MHz)
- 256MB RAM (up from 128MB)
- Digital Compass and FM
- 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus
- 32GB size
- No major changes in battery, screen and external casing.

As far as we can tell, the original poster has no track record for accurate information, though the Chinese web/forums have been a common source of early photos of recent Apple releases including the unibody MacBook and MacBook Pro casings.

At this point, we're posting it for interest alone, though the information seems believable. It's certainly expected for the next iPhone to contain a digital compass and better camera. Increases in processor speed and RAM are also feasible.
